How Delta Dental networks ensure quality care

With Delta Dental, your employees can rely on comprehensive, high-quality oral health care. Why? One of the reasons is that we’ve built the largest dentist network in the country to ensure that your employees can always find a quality dentist they trust while enjoying substantial in-network savings. But that’s not the only advantage our network offers your employees.

Objective ratings help your employees select a dentist

For employees to take full advantage of their dental benefits, they need to feel confident in choosing a dentist who meets their unique needs. To help, we’ve tried to take the guesswork out of finding great dental care.

That’s why our online dentist directory features quality ratings for Delta Dental PPO™, Delta Dental Premier® and select DeltaCare® USA dentists within our 15 enterprise states and the District of Columbia. Developed by a neutral third party, DentaQual ratings evaluate dentists on these criteria:

  • Procedure success rate measures treatment success rate, including the likelihood of repeat procedures and post-treatment problems.
  • Commitment to best practices evaluates how well a dentist follows established standards and treatment methods.
  • Value compares the type and number of prescribed treatments and the average cost per patient.
  • Patient retention compares the degree of patient retention and loyalty.
  • Treatment recommendations compares how a dentist recommends treatment in comparison to dentists in their geographic area and specialty.

DentaQual compares each dentist’s scores to the average scores of their peers to generate an overall rating. And DentaQual automatically refreshes scores each month, so your employees will know that their dentist’s rating is always current.

Member input makes our network stronger

Our members’ opinions matter to us. That’s why we pair DentaQual ratings with Yelp ratings from actual patients to give members an extra level of confidence when choosing a dentist. We even ask our members to recommend great dentists who aren’t in our network so that we can ask them to join.

Member satisfaction was our main objective in creating our network. In fact, in 2020, 98% of our members said they were satisfied with their dentist and the quality of the care they received.

A proprietary dentist networks offers your employees unique advantages

Unlike some other carriers who lease their networks, we’ve built our own. Of course, you might ask yourself why the network matters as long as your employees have access to dental care. It’s because your employees will enjoy several distinct advantages with Delta Dental’s networks versus a leased network:

  • Quality. We have direct contracts and relationships with our dentists and hold each to consistently high standards. In a leased network, carriers may not have a relationship with dentists, and dentist credentialing may be inconsistent.
  • Size. You can count on our network size to be accurate ― we update our directory daily ― and since we have relationships with our dentists, turnover is low. Carriers with leased networks may not know exactly how many dentists their networks contain, and if the carrier’s network lease ends before your contract does, some of your employees could find themselves without an in-network dentist.
  • Value. Our networks offer predictable, consistent fees. Leased networks may not be able to make that promise. And we never charge for network access, unlike some carriers with leased networks that withhold claims saving to cover access fees.

The largest network in the nation means your employees save

A large network means it’s easy for your employees to stay in network, which translates to lower costs. And when it comes to a large network, we lead the competition. Our Delta Dental Premier network is the largest in the nation, based on total unique dentists, according to Zelis Network360’s September 2021 report.

Why is counting unique dentists important? Because it sets us apart from carriers that count access points instead. Access points represent the number of network dentists at each dental office where patients are treated. This means a single dentist who treats patients at several offices could be counted multiple times, which may not represent the actual number of individual dentists in the network.

With Delta Dental, you can rest assured that your employees will receive quality care. Delta Dental’s robust, nationwide networks offer quality assurance, savings, simplicity and choice.

8 ways Delta Dental plans got better for your employees this past year

In a year like 2021, it’s easy to lose track of the updates that help your employees make the most of their Delta Dental plans. From telehealth to online resources, here are eight ways Delta Dental made it easier than ever for your employees to maintain a healthy smile.

1. Teledentistry lets employees use their benefits outside of the dentist office

In 2021, Delta Dental launched not just one but two teledentistry initiatives. Available under Delta Dental PPO™ and Delta Dental Premier® plans, Toothpic and Delta Dental – Virtual Consult let members use their existing diagnostic and preventive benefits to see Delta Dental dentists remotely at no cost.

Toothpic is perfect for members who just need a quick check-in, and Virtual Consult is great for members with more serious concerns that may require a prescription for treatment.

2. New videos make understanding networks and plans easier

The world of insurance can be difficult for people to navigate. As a benefits administrator, you know the value of clear and easy-to-understand communication. That’s why we’ve put together videos that you can share with employees to help them understand the online tools and resources available to them and the differences between the plans we offer.

3. The Delta Dental Mobile App is getting more features and more user friendly

Delta Dental is relaunching the Delta Dental Mobile App for 2022. The new app is faster and more stable and offers useful features such as member ID cards, dentist directory and a cost estimator. It will also be available on both Android and iOS. The old version of the app will be unavailable starting December 20.

4. Delta Dental and VSP are partnering up for paired vision and dental

This year, Delta Dental partnered with VSP to offer vision coverage to Small Business Program (SBP) groups. This coverage is structured in the same tiers as regular SBP coverage, so it’s easy to understand what kind of options are available. If you’re an SBP group and you want vision coverage, you can now get it in one convenient invoice paired with your dental coverage.

5. New open enrollment resources are available

This past open enrollment season brought multiple new features to help employees understand and make the most of their coverage options. In addition to the videos and teledentistry tools already covered, these resources include a new focus on “virtual” booths for open enrollment periods conducted remotely, quality ratings for dentists and refreshed website and customer service experiences. Speaking of quality ratings…

6. DentaQual ratings help employees find dentists they’ll love

This year, Delta Dental added DentaQual ratings to our dentist directory. Your employees can use DentaQual ratings to compare dentists based on objective measurements such as procedures success rate, value and patient retention. These ratings offer a simple and transparent solution to the problem of finding a great dentist.

7. Customer service gets reimagined

After two years of development, design and implementation, we rolled out our new customer service initiative, CX Reimagined. CX Reimagined brought an emphasis on soft skills, like empathy, active listening and de-escalation. Since we rolled out the CX Reimagined initiative, more members than ever before have told us that they’re satisfied with their service and that they’d recommend Delta Dental’s customer service to others. That means that you can feel confident in the quality of customer service Delta Dental provides your employees.

8. Delta Dental’s NCQA Credentialing Accreditation was renewed

Delta Dental Insurance Company’s NCQA Credentialing Accreditation was renewed through March 2024.

“Achieving NCQA Credentialing Accreditation demonstrates that Delta Dental Insurance Company has the systems, process and personnel in place to conduct credentialing in accordance with the strictest quality standards,” said Margaret E. O’Kane, president of the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA).

NCQA is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to improving health care quality. NCQA’s Credentialing Accreditation is a quality assessment program that focuses on consumer protection and customer service improvement.

These major updates from 2021 help make Delta Dental plans a choice that will help your employees maintain their oral health and lead to better attendance for your business. We’re proud to be your partners in keeping your employees happy and healthy. Together we shine, and we’ll see you in 2022!

Open enrollment: Resources and what’s new

Open enrollment can be difficult for employees to navigate, but they won’t have to go it alone. Flyers, videos and more are available to help your employees understand their coverage options, choose the right plans for their needs and make the most of their benefits.

What’s new

New initiatives and resources available for this year’s open enrollment season.

Virtual booths

If your company has virtual open enrollment software, you can get all the benefits of having an in-person event virtually. With flyers, presentations and more, a virtual booth session is the perfect educational source for employees who can’t make it into the office. (Virtual booth sessions with a live Delta Dental representative require a minimum of 100 attendees.)

Quality ratings for dentists

Choosing the right dentist can be tricky. The new DentaQual rating system provides a simple and objective rating system based on a dentist’s past performance. That makes it easy for employees to find dentists that deliver effective, appropriate and fairly priced service.

Virtual dentistry

Two options are available for employees who are looking for teledentistry tools: Delta Dental – Virtual Consult (PDF) is a video-based app for members to consult with a Delta Dental dentist live, and Toothpic (PDF) is a photo-based app that lets members submit photos of problem areas for professional analysis.

Get check-ups remotely

Callback assist

When your employees contact Delta Dental’s Customer Service, they can now get a convenient callback instead of having to wait on the line.

A redesigned website

In 2020, we rolled out a whole new design for our website and refreshed its content. This new design makes finding answers easier, whether choosing a plan, understanding benefits or just looking for tips on maintaining a healthy smile.

  • Delta Dental members resources. Help members plan visits, know what to expect at the dentist’s office and what to do after they complete their visits. There’s also useful information about value-added benefits, like virtual dentistry and preferred pricing on LASIK and hearing aids, and a wellness library with articles, videos, recipes and more.
  • Delta Dental virtual dentistry. Understand teledentistry and the differences between Virtual Consult and Toothpic.
  • Smile On. If you have employees who may be retiring or ineligible for full-time benefits, Smile On is a great way for them to get affordable coverage that meets their needs.

Find the right fit for your employees with DentaQual ratings

How do your employee search for a new dentist? Consumers often rely on reviews to help make decisions, but subjective commentary isn’t always the most reliable way to find a health professional. Dental patients deserve reputable sources based on facts. That’s where DentaQual, a new feature of Delta Dental’s dentist directory, comes in.

DentaQual is a ratings system that relies on actual data — rather than opinions — to help your employees navigate their options with ease and give benefits administrators like you confidence in Delta Dental’s offerings.

How DentaQual ratings work

When your employees search Delta Dental’s dentist directory, they’ll notice one-to-five-star scores. These DentaQual ratings are based on statistical analysis of claims data and developed by P&R Dental Strategies, a neutral third party and research company with over 20 years of experience.

The reviews are based on:

  • Procedure success rate
  • Commitment to best practices
  • Value
  • Patient retention
  • Treatment recommendations

This fair and unbiased feedback can help your employees feel more confident about choosing a dentist.

P&R Dental Strategies isn’t funded by insurance companies and provides reviews only for dentists with enough data available to make an accurate assessment.

DentaQual and your employees

As of April 2021, Delta Dental PPO™, Delta Dental Premier® and select DeltaCare® USA dentists within our 15 enterprise states and the District of Columbia have DentaQual ratings in their directory listings. Delta Dental’s dentist directory aims to make finding a dentist as easy as possible. Now, along with languages spoken, office hours and other crucial information, members can see DentaQual’s objective evaluations.

Better yet, DentaQual automatically refreshes scores each month, so members can always rely on the accuracy of their dentist’s rating.
